Why pressure on cotton?
With its properties of being renewable, recyclable and biodegradable, cotton is one of the most sustainable raw materials on Earth, from an ecological, social and economic perspective.
Due to the biological degradability property, it is possible for nature to break down cotton remnants into its constituent parts within six months, depending on the storage conditions in the soil, and reintroduce them into the natural cycle.
This therefore also applies to cotton fibers, which are washed off by washing clothes and other textiles and end up in wastewater and ultimately also in groundwater (rivers and seas).
The biological degradability of cotton thus prevents the occurrence of dangerous situations for nature, animals, and humans. Dangerous situations arise, for example, due to the increase in microplastics in the world's oceans. This increase is caused, among other things, by the slow decomposition of synthetic textiles.
Cotton is a renewable raw material and is considered an agricultural product that can be grown once or twice per season, depending on the climate zone and region.
In the raw material processing of cotton, not only the cotton fibers are used for yarns and fabrics for home and home textile products, clothing, and hygiene and medical products, but also all the remaining components of cotton production are further processed in other product industries.
Textiles and clothing made from cotton are 100% recyclable. If the fabrics are sorted by color and then crushed to the fibers, they can be used again as new yarns and fabrics to manufacture clothing or textiles. However, there is also the possibility to process the cotton scraps into cellulose fibers if the reuse in the textile sector is not beneficial. A manufacturing process is used that is very similar to the viscose process and thus ensures 100% recyclability.
